Why we're here...

Beer culture is coming of age. At any store, restaurant, bar, or friend's house you can now find at least a few good brews. In fact, there seem to be so many new beers, breweries and bars it's difficult to separate the good, the bad, and the mediocre.

If you're going spend $10 on one beer, what should you buy? If you're going to drive 2 hours to check out a brewery, what's worth your time? If you're going to plan a Friday night, what has a good selection and friendly atmosphere? We're here to help you answer these questions.

Torpedo Extra IPA

Torpedo Extra IPA is an American India Pale Ale (IPA) from the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, California.

I bought this at Raley's Market on Freeport in Sacramento for a $7.99 six-pack. The ABV is 7.2%.

The color is a reddish amber. The head pours a fluffy, thick white and soon dissipates to nice lacings. It has a nice body, with moderately high carbonation. The aroma is sweet upfront pine & subtle citrus hops with a caramel background. The taste starts with the sweet subtle citrus hops and ends on the more bitter piny hops. Nothing complex, but overall a very good taste.

I really enjoy Torpedo, is accessible in price and flavor. The flavor is well put together, but not so complex as to make it a one-off beer. I took these kayaking and it was a great addition to the trip.

This is a very good example of a West Coast/California IPA - strong piny hops that don't overpower.

Torpedo is a Must Have It.
