Why we're here...

Beer culture is coming of age. At any store, restaurant, bar, or friend's house you can now find at least a few good brews. In fact, there seem to be so many new beers, breweries and bars it's difficult to separate the good, the bad, and the mediocre.

If you're going spend $10 on one beer, what should you buy? If you're going to drive 2 hours to check out a brewery, what's worth your time? If you're going to plan a Friday night, what has a good selection and friendly atmosphere? We're here to help you answer these questions.

DeuS Champagne Beer

DeuS is a Champagne Beer brewed by Bosteels Brewery in Buggenhout, Belgium. Champagne beers are Belgium in origin and very new to the brewing world. Very few American Breweries have taken the leap, although Sam Adam's has made one, Infinium. Essentially a lager or ale is put through he same process as champagne, and in the case of DeuS, champagne yeast is used. The process takes time and a lot of skill.

I had this at Pangaea Two Brews for $55, yes $55, for a 750ml bottle. It has an ABV of 11.5%

The color is a clear, light gold with that classic champagne carbonation with little head or lacings. The aroma is fruity and spicy; apples, lemon, maybe coriander and cinnamon. Definitely reminiscent of a champagne or sparkling apple cider.  The taste, which is not overpowering, but well balanced follows the aroma with the spices, apples, lemon, and grassy/earthy hops. The ABV is also noticeable with nice alcohol warming and not as enjoyable alcohol taste. The body is medium-light, lots of carbonation, but also has a nice creaminess/oiliness that makes it stand out as a beer. It's crisp, refreshing and doesn't linger in your mouth for too long.

Overall I really liked this beer. I'd never had a champagne beer before and I really enjoyed it. This is not an everyday beer, due to the price and ABV. But I can see it being a good substitute or addition to special occasions. While I wouldn't rush out to get it, this is a Must Try It. This is a very new, interesting style taht should be experienced

As I have no other champagne beers to compare it to, I can assume this is a well made one by my own experience and the A- rating DeuS has received on Beer Adovcate after 276 reviews.
