Weihenstephaner Korbinian is a Dopplebock brewed by the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephaner in the city of Freising. The brewery is actually a regulated business of the State of Bavaria, yes even the beer in Europe is socialist.
Weihenstephaner claims to be the oldest brewery in the world as it started out over 1,000 years ago as the brewery for benedictine monks. Weihenstephaner is also home to Technical University Munich, which is one of the best brewing schools in the world. The brewery's model is "class not mass", which is well demonstrated in its classy beers.

The beer pours a dark brown color, like a porter, with a small, bubbly, tan head that leaves good lacings. The aroma is sweet with subtle notes of chocolate, dark fruits and malt. The taste is caramel and roasted malt up front followed by the dark fruits, chocolate and hints of coffee. It's medium to thick body with moderate carbonation. It's almsot creamy, refreshing and well balanced flavors.
Overall this is a great beer and is a Must Have It. I tend not to like the American made Dopplebocks. There always seems to be a funk that I'm not a fan of. However, the funk is non-existant here. This is a great example of a dopplebock and why I believe German beers will be making a comeback over the Belgians. German beers are smoother with more drinkability. If you haven't had a dopplebock or have been turned off from them, try this one. It's a great price for an amazing beer.
