Why we're here...

Beer culture is coming of age. At any store, restaurant, bar, or friend's house you can now find at least a few good brews. In fact, there seem to be so many new beers, breweries and bars it's difficult to separate the good, the bad, and the mediocre.

If you're going spend $10 on one beer, what should you buy? If you're going to drive 2 hours to check out a brewery, what's worth your time? If you're going to plan a Friday night, what has a good selection and friendly atmosphere? We're here to help you answer these questions.

PSA (Petaluma Strong Ale) Extra IPA

PSA (Petaluma Strong Ale) Extra IPA is a Strong Ale from Dempsey's Restaurant and Brewery. Originally this was just called Petaluma Strong ale.

I found this at a store in the town of Mendocino. It has an ABV of 7.1%.

The beer pours a light amber color with a thin white head and light lacings. The aroma is light with sweet caramel and toffee malts. The flavor has big malts up front followed by light citrus and light hops. There is a slight alcohol and bitter lime taste at the end. It has a medium body with average carbonation. The finish is dry.

Overall, I enjoyed the beer. It's a unique take on the classic strong ale. It's smooth and drinkable with a nice alcohol kick.

Overall, I like the beer. This is sorta of a hybrid beer - its a strong ale which has been dry hopped. I'm not sure what exactly an extra IPA, but don't expect big hop flavors. Strong ales are usually on the maltier side, but there is a good balance in PSA between malt and hop. No big hop flavor, but a balance between sweet and bitter. For a strong ale its smooth and very drinkable. I suggest you Try It.
