Why we're here...

Beer culture is coming of age. At any store, restaurant, bar, or friend's house you can now find at least a few good brews. In fact, there seem to be so many new beers, breweries and bars it's difficult to separate the good, the bad, and the mediocre.

If you're going spend $10 on one beer, what should you buy? If you're going to drive 2 hours to check out a brewery, what's worth your time? If you're going to plan a Friday night, what has a good selection and friendly atmosphere? We're here to help you answer these questions.

Steelhead Extra Pale Ale

Steelhead Extra Pale Ale is an American Pale Ale from the Mad River Brewing Company of Blue Lake, CA.

The Mad River, the name sake of the brewery is famous for its steelhead trout and excellent fishing. Hence the use of steelhead as the brewery's flagship pale ale.

This beer has 5.6% ABV.

The beer pours a light amber color that pours a thick foamy head that soon shrinks to very think and leaves thin lacings. The aroma has subtle floral hops and slight citrus hop notes, with whiffs of malt sweetness. The taste has light sweet malt flavors with a sharp, but restrained spicy and floral hop bite. There are some fruity notes that hit you during the smooth finish. The body is light, with good carbonation, and crisp.

Overall, I enjoyed this beer. Its a standard West Coast Pale Ale with clean flavors and high drinkability. If you're looking for a change of pace from Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, the hops here offer a bit more floral and fruit and less bite. I suggest you Try It.

  1. I'm a big fan of this beer. While it may not be a world beater, this has been a good consistent brew and a standard for its type.... I'll drink this anytime it is near....
